Description

This module examines the nature of security in global politics. It focuses on both traditional definitions and uses of security in terms of the relationship between states in the international system. It will, therefore, examine issues such as alliances, the Cold War, the emergence of 'the new world order', the institutions underpinning security (such as the United Nations) and other institutions of global governance. In addition it will also examine broader human security related conceptions such as humanitarian intervention and 'R2P' (right to protect); finally, it will consider issues such as migration, climate change, pandemic disease and so on and the implications for notions of security in the 21st century.
